Enlightenment is critical to many religions and philosophies, including New Age and Buddhism. Proponents of New Age spirituality believe that enlightenment is rooted in self-empowerment, self-awakening, and self-discovery. For New Age advocates, enlightenment is a concept that portrays a higher order of existence, a majestic state of being, and an emerging paradigm for a new species of human beings. Based on the Buddhist tradition, any human can become enlightened by following the Buddha’s teachings.
In Christianity, people can reach Christian enlightenment too! From my research of the Bible and its teachings, people generally reach Christian enlightenment when they are saved from sin and gain eternal life in heaven. This transcendent feeling of enlightenment came out of nowhere when I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I was in a situation I could not get out of my current situation, was unhappy, and felt totally out of control of my life. I decided to stop trying to fix my situation or escape it with an eating addiction and give up total control of my life to God. Wow, what a scary process.
As human beings, we like to be in control of our lives, but I gave that notion up. I GAVE my life, soul, actions, and fate to God and Lord Jesus Christ. I quit trying to "fix" my situation, and something miraculous happened. I found a transcendent type of faith. This transcendent faith provided a pathway to "transcend" my daily problems, challenges, and barriers. I discovered that the Book of Ecclesiastes is correct and my life here on earth is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1, NIV):
1 The words of the Teacher,[a] son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
3 What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.
The Approach I Teach
The Christian path to enlightenment is deeply personal. It involves developing a unique relationship with God, unwavering faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, repentance for past sins, and a mindfulness approach to living on earth in anticipation of living eternally in Heaven. The approach I have researched and developed includes three steps:
How do you surrender your life to God? Did you calculate and assess your level of faith in God?
Japanese philosopher Tanabe Hajime advocated for philosophy to return to religion. He proposed that philosophy is not about discussing the role of logic in arguing or debating. He believed that philosophy was not an intellectual exercise at all. Instead, he said philosophy is a process of exploring, finding, and relating to your being in the deepest possible way. It is about asking more profound questions, seeking deeper meaning in life, and surrendering and confessing to a higher authority to rediscover your true identity and spiritual being.
Hajime found that enlightenment is one form of death and resurrection while in bodily form. He argued that in Biblical terms, this informal death and resurrection process refers to the rebirth of the mind through “other power.” This process helps people move beyond their limited view of the earthly self to surrender themselves to the grace of the other power – GOD! Thus, enlightenment happens when you arrive at your true self by letting go of the self and acknowledging and trusting in the Ultimate Power.
Tanabe believes that people find enlightenment when they reach a point in their lives when they can no longer rely on their power to control, fix, or change their situation dramatically. He says enlightenment is impossible when people rely on their power, ability, and strength. It is impossible until people confess they are powerless and surrender to a Higher Power that they encounter self-awakening, wisdom, and enlightenment. Tanabe calls this concept “Absolute Nothingness.” Tanabe contends that an innate preexisting condition exists within all people to attain spiritual enlightenment. For years, different religions and philosophies have been written about bringing about this innate condition of enlightenment. He felt that one path is surrendering to God, a “Demonstration of Christianity.”
